Ancient & Classical Editorial Review
The Odyssey is a classic work attributed to Homer, set in the late Bronze Age, depicting the adventurous journey of Odysseus as he strives to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The narrative intricately weaves flashbacks revealing past heroes and events, such as the downfall of Agamemnon, and introduces memorable figures like the Cyclops, sirens, and the goddess Athena, who assists Odysseus along the way. Unlike the Iliad, this tale explores themes of cunning, hospitality, and the multifaceted roles of characters, particularly women. Robert Fagles' translation makes it accessible and thought-provoking, offering insights into Greek culture while showcasing Odysseus' struggles and triumphs.
