You can use it vertically, horizontally, or diagonally while holding it as far away or as near to the wall as you want, and it still detects studs accurately. However, the T13 doesn't work correctly on plaster walls, stucco outside walls, travertine rock wall, or concrete, and it doesn't sense the change of density caused by rafters under decking and shingles. It also can't recognize studs through ¾" plywood on top of 1 layer of drywall.
