World War II & Holocaust Editorial Review
Nineteen Steps is an emotionally captivating historical fiction novel that takes readers on a journey through the harrowing experiences of Nellie, a young woman living in London during World War II. Written by Millie Bobby Brown, known for her acting career, and co-authored by Kathleen McGurl, this debut novel surprises readers with its engaging storytelling and well-researched historical backdrop. The book is divided into three parts, each spanning a different time period during the war. The first part sets the stage, introducing the characters and painting a vivid picture of life in 1940s Bethnal Green. The Prose is concise and efficient, allowing readers to quickly become immersed in the story. However, some readers found the writing to be a bit tedious. The second part of the book is where the story truly shines, evoking strong emotions from readers. Many readers were deeply moved by the tragic events that Nellie endures, as well as the unexpected twists in her personal story. The emotional impact of this section is so powerful that some readers found themselves in tears multiple times. Despite the heart-wrenching nature of these events, the book does not shy away from showing how one can pick up the pieces and move forward. The final part of the book serves as a relatively short denouement, tying up loose ends and delivering on the emotional promise of the rest of the novel. While the ending may be seen as slightly too neat or coincidental by some, it still manages to leave a lasting emotional impact. Overall, Nineteen Steps is highly recommended for fans of historical fiction. Millie Bobby Brown and Kathleen McGurl have crafted a compelling story that combines a touching love story with the horrors and resilience of those who lived through World War II. Readers should prepare for an emotional roller coaster and be ready for the waterworks.
