The Simmons 1160/PM500 No.2 Pitcher Pump is a reliable choice for those looking for a pump to mount on a rain barrel. It comes with just the pump body and working parts, so additional parts such as a pipe, foot valve, and reducer may be needed. The pump is rated to pump 25 vertical feet and works well with a 1 1/4 galv. steel pipe. The handle and spout can be set up at different positions. It is not recommended to use this pump with city water during emergencies as the water pressure usually comes from gravity. The pump does not need to be perfectly level with the pipe and can work with some level of offset. The depth of the well is not as important as how close the water is to the surface. This pump is not suitable for wells deeper than 25 ft. It screws onto a 1 1/4 inch pipe, but an adapter can be used for different pipe sizes. If there is positive pressure in the well, the pump will not be able to arrest the outflow of water. In terms of draining back in cold weather, it is recommended to keep the handle up to allow for drainage.
