- İvan Gonçarov, Sıradan Bir Hikaye (1847) ve Oblomov'un (1859) ardından yazımı yirmi yıl süren son romanı Yalıyar'ı 1869'da yayımlayarak üçlemesini tamamladı. Rus serflik düzeninin çöküş dönemine tutulmuş bir ayna olan üçlemenin her üç başkarakteri de (yeğen Aduyev, Oblomov ve Rayski), Vladimir Korolenko'nun deyişiyle ortak bir yazgıyı paylaşmaktadır; bu, can çekişen bir sineğin yazgısıdır. Eski yıkılmakta, fakat yeni henüz ufukta görünmemektedir. Roman, Rayski'nin, Volga kenarında, nehrin oyduğu uzun yalıyarın (falezin) -roman adını buradan alır- bitişiğinde bulunan babadan kalma Malinovka köyünde geçirdiği altı ayın dramatik olaylarını konu alır.
